Type in your desired width and height in the width and height boxes, then hig "Patch." Rogue Squadron should now have an option for that resolution selectable in its settings menu. I was able to get the game to run as high as 1920x1440, but higher resoultions sadly wouldn't show up.

If you have a 1080p monitor, that resolution would be 1440x1080. I'd recommend playing it in the original aspect ratio instead. As the readme explains, you can force it to play in widescreen, but it can cause some unsightly rendering issues, as some parts of the screen aren't drawn properly. Keep in mind that Rogue Squadron is a 4:3 game. Now set the resolution you'd like to enable. Click "Find it for me" and it should find your Rogue Squadron install. Unzip it and follow the readme, or just keep reading, and I'll go through the steps.

First step: download this custom fix with UniWS, a program that helps set custom resolutions in older games. Thankfully, nice posters on the GOG forums have already figured out the easiest way to spiff up the game. It's pretty easy to run Rogue Squadron high-res, but there are a few steps involved. Just run the installer and move on to the next step: getting it working in high resolution. Installing it is as easy as usual for GOG. Until now, the game has never been available as a digital download. You can grab Rogue Squadron from GOG for $6. But getting it running at higher resolutions, and with proper controls, takes a bit of fiddling. Now, thanks to GOG, it's easy to play again on modern Windows. Rogue Squadron also pulled a bit from the Star Wars Expanded Universe fiction, which excited me to no-end when I first played it. And the snowspeeder's AT-AT-tripping cable.well, that part was more maddening than fun. Interesting, layered missions with an addictive medal system that encouraged repetition (and eventually demanded perfection). Ships that felt different and had their own advantages in combat. Factor 5 simply got everything right: cinematic camera angles in the cutscenes that evoked the original films.

While TIE Fighter was blazing a trail for space sims on the PC, Rogue Squadron was perfecting arcadey dogfighting combat on PC and the Nintendo 64, where I played it for years. Starfighter is certainly well worth looking at if you just want an undemanding Star Wars-themed shooter but once that initial thrill has worn off, you are left with little more than a simple actioner that is lacking in substance. Now this is a Star Wars game. However, there really isn't much in the way of challenge to the game, while it also suffers from the same cheesy dialogue and voice acting as the film, both of which impact severely on its long-term appeal.

The combat is hugely enjoyable, made all the more so by the beautiful visuals and excellent sound effects, which do a great job of bringing the Star Wars universe to life and with some gorgeous environments to explore and some truly cinematic moments to enjoy. Apart from this, Starfighter is a very familiar looking 3D shooter which, while undeniably fun while it lasts, is also lacking much in the way of depth.

One interesting aspect of the game is the option to play as one of three characters and who each have their own take on the events that are unfolding around them and who also have access to different craft and weapons, each with their own characteristics.

The game is set during the events of the much maligned Phantom Menace movie and is basically an updated version of the Rogue Squadron series, with players engaging in a series of action-focused flying missions based around the Battle for Naboo. While Starfighter might not be as deep or ultimately as satisfying as the TIE Fighter games, it remains an enjoyable if quite shallow slice of sci-fi action. Star Wars fans aren't exactly short of a few games to provide them with the chance of exploring their favourite universe, but the quality is unfortunately a bit wobbly as far as they go.
